We (well, the girls blame it on me) decided to take this down day to get a jump start on the AT. We drove to US Forest Service Road 42 to where it crosses the AT and hike to the southern terminus of the AT, Springer Mountain. We did that (see the photos) and then hiked back to the car. One mile down, 2,179 more to go. It was good to get on the trail but it wasn't a pleasant experience. It was very cold and windy and it was snowing and sleeting. We were all very cold and glad to be back in the car afterwards. Theresa and Aspen hiked the first mile with us.
There are two ways to get to Springer Mountain. One way is what I've described above. That way forces you to drive some winding dirt roads and then have to backtrack a mile of the trail. The other way is to start in Amicalola Falls State Park and hike north to Springer Mountain. That's an 8.8 mile hike just to get to the starting point.
The forecast for tomorrow starts with snow and wind so we've decided to postpone the big trek another day. We now plan to start on Wednesday.
