Mile 377.5, Just past Carvers Gap
I started the day with a 4 mile hike to Greasy Creek Hostel. I took a shower, ate lunch (microwave chimichanga and chicken biscuit sandwich) and resupplied. The host was wonderful. I recommend this hostel to thru-hikers. I met a Purple Heart recipient who had 100% medical retirement. I told him I was raising money for the Wounded Warrior Project. He was very appreciative and said he would donate. I told him this was to benefit him; no need to contribute. It does my heart good to see those who have sacrificed so much to still want to serve.
Most of the day was a beautiful hike...then came Roan Mountain. It leaks at about 6,200'. The climb wasn't what got me. It was the wind, the mist, and the cold. I decided not to camp at the highest campground on the AT (and also the coldest). I tried to get down to a lower elevation where there was no wind, but I just couldn't do it. I finally pulled myself off the trail at 7pm behind some brush. My tent is still swaying in the wind but its better than what I've hiked through.
